Societal Analysis
The biggest takeaways from Logan come from the issues shown concerning many different types of privacy, such as personal, corporate, and government privacy. From the very start of the movie, we find Logan in an extremely secluded place in Mexico, as he has been forced into hiding from the US government with Charles Xavier. Charles’ old age has led to him having seizures which can have drastic effects on those around him, and the US government deemed him a “weapon of mass destruction”. By retreating to a private location in the deserts of Mexico, Logan does his best to remain undercover so as to ensure that he doesn’t get himself or Charles in any trouble.
However, while personal privacy is something that should be granted to everyone, sometimes people as famous as the Wolverine can find it difficult to lay low, which is an interesting topic concerning personal privacy. Public figures can occasionally feel that they have no privacy, and someone is watching their every move. This fact is especially felt by those who live in a fictional world where superheroes exist, who can become famous world-wide.
By forcing Logan into hiding, the film also brings up the idea of what role the government might play in deciding one’s privacy. Privacy from the government can be a very important concern for all different kinds of people, from the average person to the super famous X-Men. While the information the government may want on someone like Logan may be more interesting than the info about your morning coffee, it is important to consider how much the government should be allowed to know about each individual’s life and behavior. It is important to consider what the government should and shouldn’t be allowed to know, to be able to create a secure life for all people while retaining a significant sense of privacy.
While it is important to maintain the individual’s privacy from the government, a corporation’s privacy from the government should be a much different topic. As we see in the film, the Alkali-Transigen corporation is able to carry out very disturbing experiments with children to the Mexican government providing them with too much privacy, and not subjecting them to proper regulations. Governments have the duty to regulate corporations in order to ensure that they are not privately conducting illegal actions which are harmful in any way to anything.
Logan as a film shows many examples of privacy and the implications of what it means to have too little or too much privacy in the context of the individual as well as corporations and the government.
